In John Donne’s poem “Song” is a poem in which the speaker is cynical about women. Donne’s diction or choices of words help create that tone and show how men cannot trust women. He uses allusions and metaphors to help create better images and understanding to the poem. With that, those images add on to the tone and the mood from the speaker. The poem, Donne uses the words such as “thou” “thee” “return’st” “ere” and so forth, give off the tone of somewhat of romantic yet at the same time, he uses words like “falling” “past” “devil” “stinging” “strange” and so on. Those words help continue the feeling and tone of being cynical towards women.
Song also talks of religious things such as pilgrimages. But yet at the same time, he talks of falling stars, devil’s foot, mermaids, and mandrake roots. These things remind me of Harry Potter and things that are from a fantasy world. Yet these things were things that are bad and poisonous to the body and soul. I think that Donne mixes these good and bad elements to express his feelings, showing how both good and bad things can be turned around to describe something such as unfaithful women.
In the first stanza, Donne uses command words such as “go”, “get” “tell me” and “teach me”. These words, I think that when you look at the poem, and see that he uses these words first, gives off a strong impact of the poem. The impact being that he wants or the tone is a challenging tone because of the commanding words. Donne’s poem “Song”, is about a person who doubts women, and sees them as mean and evil creatures that cannot learn to be faithful and love a man for all her life. This poem, I think that the speaker may have became this way because they must have been messed with, meaning their hrt must have been broken many times b4.
